Very little is known about Henry Smith’s life. He lived in Farringdon in the City and he became an Alderman and a successful salt merchant. He died, aged 79, in 1628.
In his will, he gave £1,000 as a charitable gift to be used to ransom English sailors from Barbary pirates.
His trustees bought land as an investment and much of it was in South Kensington, which later became the Henry Smith’s Charity Estate.
